In New Orleans, “Let the Good Times Roll” isn’t just a catchy saying—it’s a way of life. Whether you’ve seen it on parade banners, heard it shouted from a Bourbon Street balcony, or sung along to it in a brass band chorus, the phrase captures the essence of the Crescent City: joy, resilience, and the art of celebrating in the moment.
From Paris to the Parish: Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler

The famous line is actually a Louisiana twist on a French expression: “Laissez les bons temps rouler.” Directly translated, it means “Let the good times roll,” but in New Orleans, it’s more than a translation—it’s a cultural rallying cry. Born of the city’s French heritage and Creole identity, it reflects the seamless blend of languages, traditions, and personalities that make New Orleans one-of-a-kind.
While you probably wouldn’t hear this phrase much in Paris, it’s become iconic in Louisiana, especially during celebrations like Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and now, our very own Krewe of Les Bon Temps Rouler parade.
A Motto for Every Celebration

Why has this particular phrase endured? Because it speaks to the soul of New Orleans.
It’s not just about having fun—it’s about doing it together, in the streets, in the music halls, on the riverfront, and in the heart of the French Quarter.
It’s a philosophy that says:
Life is short—celebrate now.
Joy is contagious—spread it freely.
Tradition is alive—keep it rolling.
How We Roll—Literally
For the Krewe of Les Bon Temps Rouler, the motto takes on a literal meaning. We’re a Mardi Gras–style parade rolling in the springtime, complete with floats, costumes, throws, music, and enough energy to bridge the gap between French Quarter Festival and Jazz Fest. Our parade theme, "All Things New Orleans", is a moving tribute to the city’s culture—its food, its cocktails, its music, its architecture, and its people.
Every float, every marching band, and every tossed bead is an invitation to join in the celebration, to live in the moment, and yes—to let the good times roll.
Say It Like a Local
If you’re visiting from out of town, here’s your insider tip: when someone shouts “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” don’t just smile—shout it back. Clap, dance, wave those beads. In New Orleans, the good times don’t just happen; we make them happen.
So here’s to keeping the spirit alive—not just in Mardi Gras season, but year-round. And when our krewe hits the streets in April, we hope you’ll be there, raising your glass and your voice to say it with us: Laissez les bons temps rouler!
