The Story of the Carousel Bar & Its Legendary Libations

In the heart of the French Quarter, inside the historic Hotel Monteleone, there’s a bar that spins—but only if you sit still long enough. The Carousel Bar & Lounge isn’t just one of the most famous watering holes in New Orleans; it’s a living piece of the city’s literary and cocktail history, where every slow rotation tells a story.

A Bar That Moves You—Literally

Installed in 1949, the Carousel Bar is the only revolving bar in New Orleans. Every 15 minutes, the carousel makes a full rotation, giving guests a slow, mesmerizing tour of the lounge without ever leaving their seats. The whimsical design—complete with hand-painted carnival animals and glowing lights—sets the stage for a uniquely New Orleans drinking experience.

Literary Legends at the Carousel

The Hotel Monteleone has long been a sanctuary for writers, and the Carousel Bar has played host to some of the greatest literary minds of the 20th century. Tennessee Williams sipped cocktails here, perhaps mulling over lines for A Streetcar Named Desire. Truman Capote, ever the storyteller, famously claimed he was born at the hotel (he wasn’t, but the tale stuck). Other noted regulars include Eudora Welty, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner—making the bar as much a writer’s salon as a drinking spot.

Signature Sips

Of all the drinks created at the Carousel Bar, none is more famous than the Vieux Carré. Invented here in 1938 by bartender Walter Bergeron, the cocktail is a tribute to the French Quarter itself—its name means “Old Square.” The recipe blends rye whiskey, Cognac, sweet vermouth, Bénédictine, and bitters, creating a spirit-forward drink as complex and layered as the city. Often called “the Manhattan of the French Quarter,” the Vieux Carré remains a must-try for any cocktail aficionado.

Other favorites include the Pimm’s Cup, the Sazerac, and seasonal creations that showcase Louisiana flavors, making every visit a new adventure for your taste buds.

A Cultural Icon on Parade

As a float sponsor for the Krewe of Les Bon Temps Rouler, the Carousel Bar will bring its signature blend of whimsy, history, and high spirits to the streets of New Orleans. Just as it spins guests through the lounge, it will spin the city’s culture into a rolling work of art during parade season.

Why the Carousel Keeps Turning

The Carousel Bar endures because it’s more than a gimmick—it’s an atmosphere, a gathering place, and a time capsule of New Orleans glamour. Whether you’re a literature lover retracing the steps of your favorite author, a cocktail enthusiast chasing the perfect pour, or simply a visitor looking for that “only in New Orleans” experience, the Carousel Bar invites you to take a seat, enjoy the ride, and let the good times roll—one slow turn at a time.
